Student Spotlight: Kyle C.
The Student Spotlight is an ongoing series where we ask former students to share their experience with LanguageBird. In this installment, we’ll meet Kyle, a former Mandarian Language Student.
Why did you choose LanguageBird?
After finishing Chinese Level 2 at my high school, I wanted a more personalized class where I knew I would get more time to speak Chinese.
What recommendations do you have for future LanguageBird students?
LanguageBird has been fantastic, I learn more about Chinese culture and history in addition to the language itself. I would love to learn a bit more about today’s pop culture in China.
How do you plan to use your new language skills?
I plan to continue learning Chinese Level 4 and perhaps in college as well. I have been picking up sentences here and there in Chinese movies or my mom’s conversation with grandparents, perhaps I will understand a Chinese children program if I keep learning!
How did LanguageBird support your learning goals?
I really appreciate my teacher who includes a lot of history and cultural materials in my learning – which is something I am very interested in. Writing characters is a challenge for me, and I am glad the focus is more on recognizing the characters and speaking. It is important for the students to feel motivated to learn.
Describe your favorite part of your LanguageBird program.
Learning the Chinese history, because it is not covered much in our history class at school. I also loved the cooking assignment. Learning more about Chinese traditions is super fun!
What was your favorite thing that you learned?
Probably the Chinese traditions, because it applies to everyday life. My mom doesn’t even know about some of the customs Xinyi has taught me. For example, you shouldn’t stick your chopsticks into your rice bowl or point your chopsticks when talking. It was fun to explain these traditions to my parents.
